About the Beekeepers

We have a deep passion for beekeeping, community, and Jesus.

MY STORY

A little back story on how I (Crissy) got started in beekeeping was through a friend who had hives in Buffalo Gap. They took me to look at their apiary, and upon opening the hive, I fell in love. I have always been aware of and respected the honeybee, but after leaving their apiary, I dove straight into studying and researching for myself. I then started going on removals and was exposed to so many learning opportunities! I removed and kept my first hive in Spring 2020. I started attending the Big Country Beekeepers Association, and the drive to help educate others continued to grow. I started taking on speaking engagements and later was elected to be the President of BCBA. It happened so naturally and has been such a blessing. Again, God knew what he was doing and surrounded me with great people and organizations.

I now offer speaking engagements to Schools, Boy Scouts, Fire Departments, etc. I am currently pursuing A&M’s Master of Beekeeping, emphasizing Education. I aim to help others see the importance and fascination these tiny but mighty creatures bring to our everyday lives.

HOW SADIE GRACE FARMS RECEIVED ITS NAME

I had a family friend who owned Sadie out on a ranch in Comanche, Texas. Sadie and I immediately had a connection when I would visit. Unfortunately, her owner passed away, and the family could no longer keep Sadie. When I heard this, I knew where she was supposed to be. When I went back to see the family, it was like Sadie Grace knew, and others around said, “She chose you.” This could not have been more true. She was the missing piece to our farm. She took up the role of protecting the land and other animals; she has an innate ability to know her role. She walks the perimeter when let out, and she is right by my side everywhere I go. She is my spirit animal and exactly who I needed at that time in my life. I contribute it to God, once again putting me in the right place at the right time!

When I was picking the name of the apiary and farm, I was thinking about what embodies what we currently do and hope to bring to others. It seemed fitting to name it after her. She is who protects our land, animals, and us. She is fierce for what she loves and the sweetest, most gentle dog simultaneously. She loves the community and never meets a stranger.

Our farm has been built mainly through rescues, and there being a need for a loving home. Our first hive was a removal; our first 18 chickens were removed from a neglectful situation, and sweet Sadie Grace was homeless after the loss of her owner. God knew what was needed and put me in a situation to listen to his calling. I could never have imagined what he had in store for my life and homestead. He amazes me daily, making me want to share all the good news about Jesus and Beekeeping with all who will listen. We want to continue growing our farm and community with all those around us. We will uphold the most ethical practices and try to lead in love like Jesus would.

Hey Y'all,

My name is Crissy Ward, and I am a born and raised Abileneian. I went to Wylie High School and then to Hardin Simmons University, where I received a Bachelor's in Church Ministry and a Minor in Leadership Studies. I then moved around several times, but good ole' Abilene brought me back to my family in 2017. I have continued to work in our family business, Mike Ward Custom Homes. I have been a Realtor in Abilene since 2018 and with Ekdahl Nelson since 2022. In 2023, I received the Rising Star Award from the Abilene Association of Realtors. I was also nominated for the President's role for the Professional Women in Builders Association of Abilene. I was announced President of the Big Country Beekeepers Association in 2022 with the passion to keep growing and educating our beekeeping community. I am attending Texas A&M University's Master Beekeeper Program, where I have completed level one and hope to complete the second level of the program in 2024. While SGF was established in 2022, we officially became an LLC in 2023.

Life is wild but beautiful. I am blessed to have so many amazing people helping make some big things possible. This is a little about myself, but we have a whole team that goes into the growth of SGF, and I am so grateful for all the friends and family who have helped contribute and support us in all ways!

I hope my passion for educating the community about honey bees, homestead living, and Jesus shines through in all I do!

Hope to talk to you soon,
